As part of UDOT’s vision to Keep Utah Moving, the I-15 South Davis Improvements project has reconstructed the 500 South Interchange in Bountiful. The new interchange has been changed to a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) and is designed to manage the high volume of east/west traffic in this area. A DDI briefly swaps traffic to the opposite side of the road as it passes under the interstate to provide safer left turns and reduced waiting time at signals. The diverging diamond interchange allows for two-phase operation at all signalized intersections within the interchange instead of the six or more found in other interchange designs. This is a significant improvement in safety, since no left turns must clear opposing traffic and all movements are discrete, with most controlled by traffic signals.
The new 500 South Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) under I-15 is open in its new configuration. Major construction on the intersection is completed. Additional construction activities include making minor repairs and completing landscaping at the interchanges. This may continue through final project completion in October. Please pay close attention to signs and striping. Crews will monitor traffic flow in the area and make adjustments to signals as needed. See below for more information on how the new interchange functions.
Interchange Milestones
• The 500 South interchange in Bountiful functions very much like the Pioneer Crossing Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) in American Fork, except that the DDI in Bountiful goes under I-15. This short animation and graphic detail the final configuration of the 500 South Interchange and provides information for drivers on how to navigate it.
• On the weekend of June 13-15, 50 people and approximately 24 pieces of machinery converted the 500 South interchange in just 34 hours!
• See the animation below for information on how to navigate the interchange.
